1. What are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files generated by websites visited by the user, which maintain session data that could be used later in the site. The data allows the site to maintain user information between pages and also to analyze how the user interacts with the site.
Cookies are secure – they can only retain information that is entered by the browser, related to access in the browser itself or that is included in the requested page. They cannot turn into codes and cannot be used to access the user’s computer. If a website encrypts the information in the cookie, only the website can read the information.
2. What are the main types of Cookies?
Below is a brief description of the main types of cookies:
Session and Persistent Cookies
Session Cookies, which contain the information that is used in your current browser session. These cookies are automatically deleted when you close the browser. Nothing is stored on your computer beyond the time you use the site (ASP.NET_SessionId and language)
Persistent Cookies (ASPXANONYMOUS type), which are used to keep information that is used in the time between accessing the website, or used for technical purposes and to improve website navigation. This data allows sites to recognize that you are already known user or visitor and adjusts accordingly. “Persistent” cookies have a duration that is set by the website and can range from a few minutes to several years.
First-party and third-party Cookies
First-party Cookies, which belong to the website that created them.
Third-party Cookies, which are created by domains external to the website and whose data is stored at the third party.
Technical and Profiling Cookies
Technical Cookies, which are those used for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide such service (see Article 122, paragraph 1, of the Privacy Code). They are not used for any further purposes and are normally installed directly by the owner or operator of the website. They include, for example, Functionality Cookies, which allow the user to navigate according to a set of selected criteria (e.g. language, products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service rendered. Analytics Cookies are assimilated to technical cookies where they are used directly by the site operator to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and how they visit the site.
Profiling Cookies, which are aimed at creating profiles related to the user and are used in order to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the same in the context of web browsing. Due to the particular invasiveness that these devices can have within the private sphere of users, European and Italian regulations provide that the user must be adequately informed about their use and thus express their valid consent.
